The Context

Tudor Griffiths (TG Group)—a family-founded firm tracing its roots back to 1874—is one of the UK’s leading independent businesses supplying construction materials, waste management, and recycling.

In 2009, TG Group began hosting a landfill gas scheme to fill the void that an emptied quarry created. When recycling began overtaking landfill, the company built a materials recovery facility (MRF) fuelled by its energy site.

The Challenge

Initially, TG Group liaised with two landfill gas operators to manage payments on the company’s behalf and diligently monitor the site’s monthly output, the amount of electricity used on-site, and any excess exported to the grid.

While the company has a positive relationship with its landfill gas operators, TG Group had reached a point where they wanted a more detailed review of the project’s performance and a fresh perspective on their site’s potential.

What our
clients say

LumifySiteView360™ was exactly what we were looking for. I was hoping to find an external specialist who would be able to confirm that the project was achieving its full income potential.

The Solution

To address Tudor Griffiths’ challenges, we carried out our SiteView360—all we needed was the relevant paperwork.

While working closely with TG Group’s landfill gas operator, we uncovered buried data on how well the project was performing compared to other UK landfill gas sites and how much the project contributed to the environment. And by breaking down the insights in an easy, digestible, and actionable way, John and his team could use them to make brighter, more informed choices.

“I was extremely impressed with their knowledge of the industry, and they did a tremendous report. I’ve got a much better understanding since the audit took place and more confidence that the project is now meeting its full income potential and how it has performed compared to other UK landfill gas sites.”

We worked closely with Tudor Griffiths’ landfill gas operator to increase the project’s potential.

Our detailed report showed how well the site has performed in comparison to other UK landfill gas sites.

We preserved an excellent commercial relationship with Tudor Griffiths’ landfill gas operator.

The Outcome

Although John had little joy until one of our royalty payment experts got in touch, it had confirmed the need for a detailed review of the status quo.

“Lumify Energy spent a couple of months reviewing the data and producing their report. It was easy to understand and highlighted several areas for us to consider.”

Advice to other landfill gas owners

While many site owners have a positive, long-term relationship with their landfill gas operator, John says there is nothing to lose from independently reviewing your project’s performance to date. He concludes: “Obviously, people rely on the income over the course of the contract. But when you have no independent means of assessing this, it’s only common sense to ask an expert to check it for you.”
